Memorial Tourism WW1

The Great War, arguably the most significant conflict in world history, is commemorated at numerous places across the ever-shifting Western Front. While the nightmarish trench warfare in Flanders and the Somme has been more extensively chronicled, Wallonia experienced some tumultuous engagements too: the generals on both sides took no notice of borders. As the landscape of the frontline was shelled beyond all recognition, they may not even have known which country they were in as they planned their next moves. When the dust finally settled on the First World War in November 1918, historians are agreed that the first and last British Empire casualties were suffered near the Walloon town of Mons.
